Capsular contracture is a possible complication of breast augmentation surgery. After any implant is placed, the body naturally forms a thin layer of scar tissue around it, this is called the capsule. In most cases, the capsule is soft and unnoticeable. However, in some women, the capsule tightens and hardens around the implant. This condition is known as capsular contracture.
When it occurs, capsular contracture can make the breast feel firm, change its shape, or even cause discomfort. The severity can range from mild firmness to more noticeable distortion of the breast.
Treatment may involve medication, specialized massage, or, in more advanced cases, surgery to release or replace the implant. Choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon significantly reduces the risk of this complication.
